Our latest Newport Rib Company Eagle of the Week is a record-setting speedster on the track.
Â
Concordia University Irvine junior
Tamia Prince etched her name in the school record books twice last Friday as
multiple Eagles shattered marks at the Rumble in the Jungle indoor meet hosted by Pittsburg State.
Â
In the first race of the day, Prince set both the school record and a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles by dashing to a second place finish in just 8.75 seconds.Â
Prince's performance also was a provisional national qualifying mark or a "B mark." She is now in the mix to compete in the event at nationals later this spring, if there are not enough automatic qualifiers.
Â
"That was my first B mark for nationals ever," admitted Prince. Â "When I finished the race, I was so surprised that I ran that fast but I was very proud that the hard work from the past few weeks paid off."
Â
Her next goal for that event is to trim her time closer to the "A mark," (8.4 seconds) which would automatically qualify her for nationals.
Â
"I was impressed with Tamia's ability to compete," said CUI interim head coach
Keegan Bloomfield. "We talked a lot about competing with those around them. She came out and ran a great race in the hurdles and I can't wait to see what she can accomplish this season."
Â
But the Carson, Calif. native wasn't done. As the third leg of the 4x400 meter relay, Prince joined CUI teammates
Sarah Herron,
Madison Hergert and anchor Fatima Wague for another record-setting performance. By placing third with a time of 3:55:46, that quartet now owns the quickest time in that event in CUI history.
Â
"It gives me confidence that we can go out and do amazing things this season," said Prince. "I'm really proud of everybody."
Â
Prince is majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in marketing and data analytics.
Â
A graduate of Mayfair High School, Prince says her favorite movie is Scooby Doo and she enjoys listening to Sade and Maxwell.
Â
One of her favorite athletes is Olympic sprinter Alyson Felix and she was thankful to meet the six-time gold medalist once at a LA Sparks game.
Â
"I was so in shock and starstruck but she was very nice," explained Prince.
Â
Prince and members of the CUI indoor track and field team are gearing up for their next competition this week at Concordia, Nebraska.
