FRESNO, Calif. - Concordia University men's water polo used a strong third quarter to pull away from Fresno Pacific, enroute to a 14-11 to go to 2-1 in WWPA Conference play.
Coming off their biggest win of the season one week ago, the Eagles looked to continue their solid play this month against the Sunbirds. Â
Just over two minutes into the game the Eagles took the lead on a goal from Patrik Zsiros. They got two more goals in the quarter, both from Nick Walker. Fresno Pacific scored two goals in the final 90 seconds of the quarter to get within one after one.
Sunbirds' utility man, Curtis Vidinoff, scored three of their four goals in the second quarter. Â
The Eagles were able to get on the board in the final two minutes of the second quarter with goals from Nick Taylor and Messan Moore. They headed into halftime down one.
The third quarter is where it all started to click for the Eagles. After a quick Sunbirds goal 21 seconds in the second half, the Eagles racked off five straight. Marius Jakimcikas lead the barrage with three goals of his own. Â
Austin Barton scored four of the final five Eagle goals as he is finding his game after spending some time on the bench due to injury. He provided a much needed spark in the fourth quarter as the Eagles never seemed to lose momentum in the second half.Â
Head coach Dreason Barry was very pleased with the overall performance of his squad, especially their second wind in the second half. Â
"In the second half we played much faster on the counter attack and capitalized on the advantage," said Barry. "Austin had great post-up moves that lead to goals and a 5 meter penalty, which Marius shot and scored."
The Eagles, who have not been healthy for most of the year, were able to play with all their pieces this afternoon. What transpired was assists on nine of their thirteen goals and goals from seven different players.Â
Coach Barry had this to say on his team finally playing at full strength, "Austin was due for a break out game coming off an injury. With the team coming off of injuries and reaching full strength we are feeling confident with our second surge of the season."
The Eagles have no time to bask in the win as they face UC Davis tomorrow in Davis at 12:00pm.  Â
