Box Score POMONA, Calif. - The Eagles took on the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona in an intense battle of two teams looking to get the ball rolling.
Â
Concordia's keeper Braeden Hatt had his work cut out for him in the first half as Pomona controlled the tempo. The Broncos had five opportunities at the net before scoring their first goal in a one on one opportunity with the keeper in the 30th minute of the half. The Broncos had nine opportunities at the net with six of those being on goal.
Â
The Green and Gold struggled to find opportunities at the net with only one shot attempt throughout the first half. Junior forward Elijah Amadin was credited for the lone shot for the Eagles in the 40th minute of the half.
Â
With the second half underway, the Broncos looked to continue where they left off. In the first 40 seconds into the half, Cal Poly Polmona scored on a throw-in with a streaking midfielder down the center of the field catching the Eagles off guard.Â
Â
Moments later, with the Eagles trailing 2-0, Bryan Lopez and Alfonso Quezada served as a one-two punch in a give and go leaving Lopez a wide open shot that whipped right into the net narrowing the Broncos lead to 2-1.Â
Â
The Green and Gold were not satisfied. There was more work to be done and the newcomer, Erick Correa in his season debut did not shy from the moment. In the 74th minute of action Correa crossed a nice ball into the box where his teammate Caley Powers headed the ball right past the CPP keeper's hand into the net to tie the game.
Â
With the score knotted up, both teams ramped up the pressure and competed to their limits. CUI would not be denied of this victory.Â
Â
In the 82nd minute of the match, Correa left his mark on the game once again scoring off of a free kick to complete the second half comeback victory. Concordia managed to keep the Broncos out of the net in the last few minutes to edge out CPP 3-2.
Â
"Pomona is a very talented and organized team," said head coach Chris Gould. "I think the second goal we gave up could have deflated us, but the credit goes to our guys. They stuck with the game plan and battled. I'm very proud of them and how they worked for one another."
Â
Although Cal Poly applied pressure taking 23 shots on the night, they were not able to convert on their opportunities like the Eagles. The Green and Gold took 6 total shots with 5 being on target and 3 of them finding the net.
Â
The Eagles are in for a quick turnaround as they face PacWest rival Azusa Pacific in a non-conference showdown Saturday, Sept. 21st at 3:00 p.m. back on home turf. For the full schedule of the CUI men's soccer team, click here.
