Prince, Avila Race Off With New School Records

Multiple New Marks Set by Women's Indoor Track & Field Team

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The CUI track and field teams had an amazing weekend at the Indoor Collegiate Classic at the University of New Mexico.

The Eagles proved that their off-season hard work does in fact pay-off. The Green and Gold had student-athletes hit personal records, national qualifying times, and school records.

Among the many highlights, senior Tamia Prince broke a school record in the 60m hurdles race with a time of 8.54 seconds. This gave Prince the fastest 60m hurdle time for all of Division II sprinters in the nation.

"I was so excited," said Prince. "When I first finished my race, I had not seen my time but I heard my teammates screaming, shouting, and cheering for me. I immediately got excited because I knew my teammates had known my goal was to hit 8.5 seconds, so when I looked over to the clock and saw that I had hit my goal time, I began leaping and skipping around the track!"

Senior Aaron Mason ran a personal record (PR) in the 200m dash on the very first day of the meet to set the tone for the CUI track and field squads.

With Mason's PR, the momentum for the Eagles kept rolling. Junior Malia Avila had an astonishing weekend of her own. Avila ran a PR, national qualifying time, and last but certainly not least, a CUI school record time in the 200m race. With that performance, Avila also posted the 21st fastest time for Division II at 24.76 seconds in that race.

"I mentally focused on myself and my physical abilities," said Avila. "I was shocked because I had specific goals for the event and I not only met them, but I surpassed them. Again, it was shocking, but overall it makes me excited for what this season could hold."

Gabriella Frost also had a breakthrough performance and set a school record in the discuss, giving the Eagles three different student-athletes that etched their names in the CUI record books in a span of 48 hours.

The CUI track and field team will look to continue breaking records on Feb. 14 & 15 at the indoor "Big Meet" at Grand Valley State University.
