Lautz Named PacWest Player of the Week

IRVINE, Calif. - Senior outfielder Matt Lautz has been named the PacWest Player of the Week after beating Westcliff 5-4 and winning the non-conference series over Point Loma this past weekend.

Over the course of the week with five games played, Lautz went 8-for-17, hitting .471 and cranked a walk-off solo homer to beat Point Loma on Friday in the bottom of the ninth. He also went 4-for-4 at the plate in the second CUI win over PLNU that afternoon. Lautz collected two doubles, two walks and five RBI this past week to help CUI go 4-1 in five games.

"Matt Lautz is able to do so many different things in our offense and that is why we have him hitting in the second spot of our line up. He's a tough out, he can handle the bat, he can drive the ball, he can run and he just always seems to be on base," said head coach Joe Turgeon. "Lautz had a great week and beyond the numbers had some unselfish type of at bats that helped our team be successful that don't necessarily help the individual stat line," added Turgeon. "We are proud of the individual award for Matt and look forward to hopefully more."

The Agoura Hills native has compiled a 10-game hitting streak after 14 games thus far.

"My first couple of games of the season did not go the way I wanted. I felt I was putting too much pressure on myself and was trying to do too much," said Lautz. "After I realized that, I have just been trying to help the team win every time I can and I have trust in my teammates that if I do not get the job done, they will pick me up like they have been all year."

For the season Lautz has 17 hits, 10 RBI, one triple, and five doubles hitting .327 with five stolen bases. His walk-off home run against Point Loma on Feb. 21 was his first of the season and one to remember.

"This team is an older group and we have meshed really well together," added Lautz. "Everyone on the team is friends with one another and our chemistry is great. Everyone is buying into there roles and realizing that everyone on the team matters and can help us win games. This is a special group and right now we're just riding the wave and trying to enjoy every second of it."

The Eagles look to take on Westcliff at the Great Park in Irvine, Calif. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. Concordia will then continue its campaign this weekend and host its PacWest season opener against Holy Names with two doubleheader days, Friday Feb. 28 and Saturday, Feb. 29. The first pitch for both days are set for 11 a.m. and the second game is slated for 2 p.m.
