IRVINE, Calif. –
Shane Schick had quite a debut for the Concordia University Irvine baseball team over the past weekend.
The freshman outfielder from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. went 4-for-9 at the plate and helped the Eagles take the season series over the host Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. For his efforts, Schick was named PacWest Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Remarkably, Schick hit safely in each of his first four career plate appearances. In the season opener,
he entered midway through the game and responded by going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. In the second game of the series, he scored twice after reaching on a single and a hit-by-pitch to help CUI
log its first victory of the year. In addition, he finished the week with an impressive .500 on-base percentage.
"It felt great to show the team what I can do as a freshman," said Schick. "But it's just the beginning and we are all just getting started."
"We knew as a staff talking, and with the fall and spring that Shane had put up, we wanted to put him in the game at some point," added CUI head baseball coach
Joe Turgeon. "When (the Toros) made a pitching change to a left-handed pitcher (in the season opener) we felt that was the right time to make the change."
"Shane's been doing really, really well for us all year and he's a younger player among an older team that we have," continued Turgeon. "He had a lot of opportunities over the weekend and a lot of quality at-bats which is something we talk about. He was a spark for us and he brings a lot to the table within that lineup. I'm very proud of him knowing he was named the Freshman of the Week award his first time out in collegiate baseball and I'm very proud of a couple other freshmen as well. I know a lot of the older players gave him a lot of credit and hopefully that will carry on with his confidence moving forward throughout the season. We're excited for his future and what he's going to bring to this team."
The Green and Gold also won the rubber match against CSUDH this past Sunday by a count of 7-5. The offense looked fantastic, plating 32 total runs in the three games for an average of 10.6 runs per contest.
"I couldn't be more proud of the guys I have around me on a daily basis," said Schick. "They never gave up and they never will."
Schick and his teammates are slated to play five games this week. T
he Eagles visited No. 12 Azusa Pacific for a non-conference contest on Tuesday before holding their first home series of the year this coming weekend in their newly renovated stadium.
The Eagles will welcome the Regis Rangers to town for a four-game set beginning with the home opener Friday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. The two squads face off for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. and then close out the weekend with a Sunday matinee at 12 p.m.
