Top 20 for '20: Concordia's Correa Dazzles In CUI Soccer Debut

No. 11 - Eagles New Addition Makes Immediate Impact

IRVINE, Calif. – As the CUI community continues to take on the COVID-19 pandemic, the Eagles athletics department has decided to honor the athletes with the 20 most memorable moments in CUI Athletics from the 2019-20 school year.

We continue our Top 20 for '20 series with No. 11 on the list, which is a look at men's soccer team stud, Erick Correa, in his dazzling debut in a Green and Gold uniform.

The match was a battle against the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos who managed to gain the upper hand on the Eagles 1-0 after the first 45 minutes of play. In the first half, the CUI squad only managed to get one shot at the net by way of junior midfielder Elijah Amadin.

As the second half began the Broncos scored early and extended the lead to 2-0. Shortly after, Eagles forward Bryan Lopez cut the deficit to 2-1 in a give-and-go with teammate Alfonso Quezada.

Correa, a new member of the team who had only previously played in practice, made his presence felt immediately when he entered the match in the second half for his first official minutes as an Eagle. In the 74th minute of action, Correa crossed a nice ball into the box where his teammate Caley Powers headed the ball right past the CPP keeper's hand into the net to tie the game. The game was knotted 2-2.

Correa was not done yet! As both teams ramped up their energy and pressure, the San Juan Capistrano, Calif. native proved to be ready for the moment. In the 82nd minute of the match, Correa left his mark on the game once again by scoring off of a free kick to complete the second half comeback victory. Concordia managed to keep the Broncos out of the net in the last few minutes to edge out CPP 3-2.

"It felt great to be able to help the team complete the comeback," said Correa. "I consider it as one of the most memorable moments in my career. The week leading up to the game pushed us to new limits both physically and mentally in practice, so I believe that may have been a part of the reason we edged out the victory."
