IRVINE, Calif. - An all-around renaissance man, senior
Dion Chung scores points for the Concordia University Irvine track & field program and leads the baritone group in Men's Chorus.
          Â
While some may wonder if having a passion for both of these activities can actually work, Chung proves that it is not only possible, but enjoyable.
Â
A graduate of Lowell High School in the San Francisco area, Chung is a team player who has helped the CUI track & field program in many ways. He scored points at the PacWest Conference Championships two years in a row in the high jump and the triple jump, even though those were not necessarily his favorite events. Chung is actually passionate about the sprints and the 200m. However, he is always a teammate up for a challenge, and he helped the men's team take third place in 2019.Â
Â
With all the time commitment he's made with track and field, Chung says he did his research before joining Men's Chorus to make sure he could have enough time to be committed to both teams.Â
          Â
The hard work of auditioning paid off for Chung. Ultimately, as Men's Chorus provides a few scholarship options and concert performances on and off campus. While the track and field team gets to travel the United States for meets, the Men's Chorus program has also traveled, singing at churches in Arizona, New Mexico, and even Hawai'i.
Â
When asked what his favorite event to perform, Chung mentioned the famous Concordia Christmas Concert. He had the opportunity to sing "Mary Did You Know?" and said it was his favorite song to sing.Â
Â
"The blind will see, the deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb"Â
Â
The Christmas Concert, as well as the brand-new and beautiful Borland-Manske music building are a representation of Concordia's commitment to creating a positive experience for the students, as well as the surrounding community, especially to praise the name of the Lamb, Jesus.Â
Â
As Chung prepares in the next few months for a fantastic outdoor track and field season, he will also prepare for an online Valentine's day celebration, for Men's Chorus. To all the music lovers, keep a lookout for the fun event. And to all the prospective students who wonder if excellence in both music and sports can be achieved, at Concordia, there is no question.Â
