LA VERNE, Calif. - The CUI men's swimming and diving team are on the way to winning the La Verne Winter Invite with just one day left in the Invitational. With two of three sessions completed the Eagles have 1312.5 points to PCSC competitor UCSC at 977 and Simon Fraser at 958. The CUI women's swimming and diving team are in second place behind DI USD and are 57 points ahead of Simon Fraser. They are comfortably in front of the seven PCSC schools in attendance.
Both the CUI teams continue to impress and add additions to the record books while breaking their personal records with five more match-ups before the PCSC conference championships.
Here is how the CUI swimming and diving teams finished after Saturday:
Women:
Senior
Katelyn Thomas won the 100 back Saturday by 1/100th of a second.
Ryan Burke - 2nd 400 IM (4:31), 100 Butterfly (56.88); 8/10ths from NCAA cut in each, which places Burke second all-time in CUI history in fly, 3rd in IM
Georgia Caraway - 4th 100 fly (PR and fourth all-time in CUI history)
Chloe Norris - 1:00.39 100 back (PR)
Bella Garritano 100 breast (1:06.77, PR, fourth all-time)
Amelia Brady - 200 free (1:56.15, eighth place, PR)
Kayla Newman - 3m diving (seventh place)
Men:
Kyle Benjamin was 2nd in the 400 IM earning an NCAA "B" qualifying time.
Ryan Martines - 2nd breast (56.12 is a PR and sixth all-time in CUI history)
Christopher Haygood - 200 free (1:41.23, 2nd place, sixth all-time)
Thatcher Grooms - 52.51 100 back (second place, PR)
Jayden Hernandez - 100 butterfly (50.39, eighth place, seventh all-time)
Jack Harris - 100 breast (58.57, fifth place, PR)
Relays:
Men's 200 medley relay (Grooms, Martines, Hernandez, Cortes) 1:32.40 placed second and fifth all-time. Cortes split a 20.7 on the anchor while Townsend did the same on the "C" relay.
Women's 200 medley relay (Thomas, Hardey, Jones, Silzel) with a time 1:47.00 that earned them third place and fifth all-time. Silzel split a 23.9 on the anchor.
Men's 800 free relay (Benjamin, Haygood, Sutherlin, Stocek) finished second with the ninth fastest time in CUI history where Stocek anchored in a solid 1:43.2.
This meet is testing both teams mettle. Although the teams are going through adversity they are battling and getting their hand to the wall first more often than not. The coaches are happy with the resiliency and determination and hope to push forward with this momentum throughout the season for the Eagles.
Both teams will finish out Sunday at the La Verne Winter Invitational and look to stay in their respective places with first and second. The Eagles will be back in action at the Lancer Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 9 a.m.
