Newport Rib Company Eagle of the Week: Christopher Haygood

By Billi Derleth

This week our Newport Rib Company Eagle of the Week is Christopher Haygood from the men’s swimming and diving team. He is a freshman studying business marketing and plans to go into the family business after he graduates.

The new Eagle was also named PCSC Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday for his outstanding efforts in the pool this past weekend in the Green vs. Gold intrasquad scrimage. That day, Haygood won the 50 and 100 freestyle against his CUI teammates, and in the process, posted the second-best and third-fastest time in the PCSC so far this season.

Haygood does not have a pre-meet routine or superstition, but he does “try to not think too hard about a race and psych [himself] out.”

When Christopher was asked about his mindset for this season he responded thoughtfully.

My mindset for this season is to work on the little things to help my times, slowly work my way up to the top in conference and win my events, and hopefully help my team win some relays and maybe even conference.

When Haygood was asked about his favorite part of being a member of the swimming and diving program. He responded that his “favorite thing about being a part of [the] team is the people [he has] met. They really make being on this team worth it!” He also believes that “CUI has helped [him] develop [himself] to be more accountable and a better swimmer.”

Along with having great teammates Haygood enjoys being a part of the swimming and diving program because he loves swimming. When he was asked what swimming meant to him he responded,

Swim means a lot to me, it is a great family that I’m lucky to be a part of. It’s also a good way to stay in shape and help keep me near to my friends.

His favorite part of swimming at the college level is the sportsmanship.

“No matter who I have swam (with or against), win or lose, everyone is a great sport,” explained Haygood.

When Haygood is not in the pool, he enjoys playing games and watching television with his teammates.

A closing note from Haygood is that “the best advice I’ve received from a coach was breathing is overrated anyways, just swim.”
