Monterey Park, Calif. -The Men's 4x100 Medley Relay executed an outstanding race plan in the final event of the second session at the PCSC Championships. Freshman
Logan Irvine and seniors
Jack Harris,
Jayden Hernandez, and Joseph Molettieri won CUI's first ever gold in the event and did so in school record time (3:19.09). They did it in dominating fashion as second place, Biola was more than 2 seconds behind. Logan, Jack and Jayden kept the Golden Eagles within a body length of heavily favored Fresno Pacific and for the second year in a row, Joey put down an anchor swim for the ages taking the lead on the final turn and hammering the finish (he came from behind on the anchor to lead the win the 800 free relay in 2024). This win, coupled with a night filled with epic races, catapulted CUI into 3rd place in the team race, 70 points behind Biola with two finals sessions to go.
30 minutes before he anchored that relay, Joey came up with the biggest individual swim of his career, placing 2nd in the 200 freestyle in a personal best, 1:38.83. This is the second fastest time in CUI history and is under the NCAA "B" qualifying time.
The Golden Eagles put 19 athletes into the conference finals tonight with 8 A-final (top-8 places), 5 B-final (9-16) and six C-final (17-24) appearances.
Jackson Rosol continued his incredible freshman campaign with a barrier breaking personal best in the 400 IM. His 3:59.68 earned him a silver medal and the 3rd fastest time in CUI history. Tommy Kelly was 8th in the same event with a season best 4:07.08p.
Alice Stainer swam her final ever 200 freestyle earning a 4th place finish and NCAA qualifying time of 1:52.51p.
Carissa Ward threw down two amazing 400 IM swims with her 4:33.30 moving her up to 6th in the event and #5 in school history.
Jayden Hernandez was 4th in the 100 butterfly (49.07p) and Logan was 7th in the event (49.46p). Finally, freshman
Chloe Dobie put up a CUI personal best in the women's 3m diving final grabbing 4th place.
The best of the rest included 100 butterflyers
Naomi Nakaya (9th, season best),
Sam Diamond (16th, 50.70p, PR), and
Jacob VanRensburg (19th, 51.20 PR), The men put all six swimmers into the final of the 400 IM. Behind Jackson and Tommy were
Hunter May (10th, 4:05.49),
Trai Xiong (11th, 4:06.39, PR),
Aidan Keane (12th, 4:06.78, PR) and
Garrison Veron (23rd, 4:18.00p, SB).
Rachel Maki (1:55.54p) was 21st in the 200 free and
Tom McCabe (1:43.01, 17th),
Mitchell Cullen (1:44.12, 22nd) and
Lanis Webb (1:44.91p, 24th) all scored for the men in that event.
The women's 400 medley relays provided their own adrenaline rush. Swimming in the 1st of two heats, the CUI "B" relay of freshmen
Brooke McCoy,
Brinkley Hallgren, junior
Aranza Martha and freshman
Ruby McCullough blazed to a win in a stunning 3:53.57. This is 2/10 of a second off of the school record that the "A" relay set in November (3:53.26). In the next heat,
Aubrie Carver,
Alex Leland, Naomi, and Alice took their own record down nearly a full second to 3:52.50. It was good for 5th overall in the race and demonstrating their tremendous depth, the "B" relay was 6th overall! Brinkley's 1:03.4 breaststroke split tied for the fastest leg in the entire field of swimmers.
The 200 free relay got the meet rolling with the women's "A" squad (Alex, Aubrie,
Noelle Landon-23.6 split,
Rachel Maki) swimming to a 5th place finish and the 5th fastest time in school history (1:36.31). The men's relay, made up of freshmen
Legend Storer,
Logan Irvine, soph
Jacob VanRensburg and junior
Jonathan Dose, positively flew to a bronze medal and the 7th fastest time in CUI history (1:23. 23). Jonathan has medaled on this relay in each of his three seasons as a Golden Eagle.
