Track & Field Gears Up For First Outdoor Competition in Over a Year

For many on the CUI track and field team, Saturday, March 13, 2021 will be a very memorable date.

It will be almost exactly an entire year since the last time many freshmen through fifth-year seniors have competed against another team in an outdoor meet.

The start of the lockdown proved to make life challenging and full of grief for many.  However, it was the ongoing months and over a year of no competitions to look forward to that made many young student-athletes lose some of their motivation.

This weekend, however, the "Fight for So-Cal" track and field meet is putting an end to the drought.  Concordia will join Azusa Pacific, Point Loma Nazarene and Biola in getting the chance to fight for the title of the best university in the PacWest in the southern region of the state.

While the title is still to be determined, CUI track and field student-athletes, members of the Eagle family, are happy to express what competing together in over a year means to each of them.

Teyah Holliday, a junior sprinter from Las Vegas, Nevada, described her perspective on this coming weekend.

"Being allowed to compete means a lot to me because it just goes to show that no matter what you have to endure or what obstacles you face, in the end everything works out and it's all worth it," said Holliday.

Jose Munguia, a distance runner from nearby Tustin, California, mentioned the same sacrifices and hard work as his teammate, while also concluding that an entire year's worth of work will be displayed in this race this weekend.

Freshman AJ Adams, a jumper from Carbondale, Colorado, mentioned that he gets the joy of "finally starting his college legacy."

"It's a huge blessing and I am just happy to represent my school and be able to put on the Concordia jersey," said sophomore distance runner Alana Hurley, who hails from Scottsdale, Arizona.
