IRVINE, Calif. - The Eagles swam their final meet of the season this past weekend prior to the PCSC Conference Championships which takes place in three weeks. This also marked the final home meet for the 16 seniors on the team.
The men swept Fresno Pacific, and a very strong UCSC squad while the women defeated the Sunbirds. On the season, the CUI men finish with a dual meet record of 5-1 and the women, 4-2.
Some highlights of the men's events were senior
Kyle Benjamin coming in first place in both the 200 IM, and the 200 breast. Fellow senior
Alberto Cortes posted his fasted unrested time in three seasons swimming the 400 free relay. Senior Ryan Martinez finished first overall in the 100 breast, and the medley relay of
Lanis Webb,
Ryan Martinez, Alberto Cortez, and
Jayden Hernandez were victorious as well.
On the women's side for CUI, senior
Faith Silzel came in second place in the 200 free. In the women's 400 free relay,
Hailey Garcia,
Sara Jones,
Amelia Brady, and
Faith Silzel rallied from third place to grab the second spot in the final seconds of the race.
"We have asked them to continue to put in the work in practice and were very pleased with the racing effort Saturday," head coach
Bert Bergen said. "We'll start to rest and prepare for conference soon and that's going to pick up a lot of spirits".
PCSC conference championships start on Feb. 16, and conclude on Saturday Feb.19 in St. George, Utah.
