Golden Eagles Once Again On Point

CUI Knocks Off Nationally-Ranked Sea Lions For Second Time

IRVINE, Calif. – For the second time this season, the Concordia University Irvine women's soccer squad emerged with an impressive victory over nationally-ranked Point Loma on the pitch.

CUI earned a 2-0 home win over the No. 16 Sea Lions on Wednesday afternoon thanks to some smooth moves and stellar play in the midfield and along the back end.

The Golden Eagles already beat Point Loma in San Diego in a non-conference match last month when freshman Hailey Havican scored the game-winning goal on the road to beat a then-No. 6 Point Loma team.

This time, Concordia opened the scoring in the 32nd minute of action.  Leading scorer Riley Walkington struck again after tracking down a ball sent down the line beautifully by SAAC President Analisa Gjonovich.

Walkington leads the Golden Eagles and is tied for the league lead with seven goals already this regular season.  She finished Wednesday leading the entire PacWest Conference in game-winning goals (four) and points (17) as well.

Recently named PacWest Player of the Week Jadenn Carrillo also net her fifth goal of the season.  Less than five minutes after Walkington scored, Carrillo caught the Sea Lions off guard on the edge of the box, maneuvered around multiple defenders after winning the ball and then smacked an insurance goal past the keeper to make it 2-0.

The Golden Eagles had a few more chances to add to their advantage but were content with keeping the pressure on and minimizing any windows of Point Loma to crawl back into the contest.  The Sea Lions did get a few scoring opportunities in the waning moments of the second half but a handful of shots were not on target and freshman Riley Urquiza came up with a total of five saves to preserve the shutout.

CUI is back in action next week with three home contests against the Hawaii schools in the PacWest Conference.

Hawaii Pacific visits on Monday at 3:30 p.m. before nationally-ranked Hawaii Hilo comes to town next Thursday and Chaminade arrives on Senior Day on Saturday, Oct 29 on campus.
