IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 11 Concordia University Irvine men's lacrosse team stayed unbeaten after a thrilling effort this past weekend that saw the Eagles take down No. 6 Cal Poly by a score of 11-6.
Both teams graded goals to start the game until the Eagles took a 3-1 lead. In the second quarter, Cal Poly stormed back tying the game at 3-3. CUI then went on a run taking a 6-3 lead going into the half. That was a close of the game would get despite a significant advantage in the time of possession by Cal Poly. The second half was a back & forth battle but the Eagles led at the end of every quarter. This marks the program's first win over Cal Poly.
"
Tyler Schweickert and the entire team defense really stepped up this game." said CUI head coach
Jesse Foss.
Schweickert made 17 saves in cage and the entire defense held their opponent to 6 goals. The offense was led by the attack of
Troy Hofer (2 goals, 2 assists), Andrew Buckley (3 goals), and
Chad McFadden (3 goals). Jimmy Chadwick had his most productive game as an Eagle posting three assists as well.
"Our offense has really stood out in our early games but this game belonged to our defense," explained Foss. "They were aggressive, physical, and set the tone the entire game. To hold a team to six goals is a feat in itself. Let alone against a top 10 team like Cal Poly."
Eagles defenseman
Braden Schneider was also named MCLA Division I Warrior Player of the Week for his efforts in helping the team turn in a superb performance.
