High Five: Eagles Capture Five PacWest Conference Weekly Awards

Softball Players Massa & Morris Join Dixon and Basketball Duo

IRVINE, Calif. – To say last week was a great week to be an Eagle would be a huge understatement.

Two veteran basketball players, a new outfielder on the baseball team, and two members of Concordia's nationally-ranked softball squad were all named PacWest Players of the Week on Monday by the league.

Together those five CUI student-athletes and their respective teams won 13 total games for the week ending on Sunday, Feb. 27 across all sports.  Both the CUI softball (No. 3) and baseball (No. 23) teams are also nationally-ranked and have not lost a single series.

Megan Massa – Softball - Player of the Week
Massa hit .524 over the last six games by going 11-for-21 at the plate with two triples, two doubles and 3 RBI.  She also scored nine times as CUI's leadoff hitter and leads the entire league in runs scored.  The Rodriguez High School product has hit safely in 17 of Concordia's first 20 games and opened the year with a nine-game hitting streak.

Katlin Entrup – Softball - Pitcher of the Week
The right-hander tossed two complete games for the Eagles and struck out 20 batters in 14.0 innings.  She only allowed one earned run in those two dominating victories and leads CUI with a 6-0 record on the mound.  The Claremont High School alum owns a paltry 1.62 ERA in eight appearances this year. Entrup, Massa and the Eagles improved to 20-0 after finishing off a sweep of Academy of Art on Monday.

Michael Dixon – Baseball - Player of the Week
The outfielder looked extremely comfortable at the plate against Academy of Art over the weekend, finishing with four extra-base hits including a pair of home runs on Sunday. He totaled seven RBI and six runs scored as the Eagles offense was clicking on all cylinders against the Knights. When Dixon collects a hit, CUI usually wins, as he has a base knock in all but one of the team's nine victories.

Michaela VanderKlugt – Women's Basketball – Player of the Week
VanderKlugt earned her 14th PacWest weekly award after the final regular season games of her collegiate career. Those 14 awards are now the most across all sports for a Concordia athlete, surpassing the previous record of 13 set by former softball All-American pitcher Callie Nunes and the second most in PacWest history.  VanderKlugt set another record by shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the floor against Holy Names, which is the most field goals made without a miss in a single game in PacWest history. She finished that game with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists in just 21 minutes and then she added 14 points and 20 rebounds against No. 16 APU on Senior Night.

CUI will play Biola on Thursday in the upcoming PacWest Conference Championships.

Jalen Sanders - Men's Basketball – Player of the Week
Sanders had arguably the best week of his entire CUI career as he hit the game-winning three-pointer with two seconds left to beat Holy Names this past Thursday night. He followed that up with a huge trey late in Saturday's game against Azusa Pacific, which helped clinch a win for the Green and Gold on Senior Night. For the week, Sanders averaged 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in Concordia's three home victories.

The CUI men will also play Biola on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in the upcoming PacWest Conference Championships hosted at Fresno Pacific University.
