IRVINE, Calif. - The Golden Eagles open up their 2023 season with a four-game home stand against Regis which starts this Thursday Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. in Irvine.
CUI was picked to finish third in the PacWest preseason poll tallying 59 points. Point Loma was picked to win the conference with 79 points, and right behind them was Azusa Pacific with 74 points.
The Green and Gold finished last year with a 26-23-1 record, and had a conference record of 19-13. This year will look different for the Golden Eagles having lost eight players with starting experience, but they've gained 10 players from the transfer portal which include five from Division I schools.
Junior center fielder
Michael Dixon was named to the All-PacWest Preseason Team as well as the NCBWA West Region Preseason team. The Oakland native had a monster year with CUI hitting .353 with six long balls in the spring of 2022. Dixon also recorded 61 putouts from center field and ended the year with zero errors committed.
Outfielders
Nathan Benefeito and
Calvin Schonebaum also return along with a crop of solid pitchers such as
Tristan Perrin,
Riley O'Sullivan and Matthew Des Marets.
CUI is also slated in the top ten regional rankings and was voted No. 10 to open the year in the NCBWA Preseason Poll which includes the three leagues on the west coast. Point Loma, APU and CUI were all in that initial field of ten.
