Golden Eagles in Victorious Sprint Parade Against Redlands

IRVINE, Calif. - The men's and women's swim teams hosted the Bulldogs from the University of Redlands on Saturday at Portola High School. In the Golden Eagles final meet before their mid-season event in three weeks, the teams broke through with some great swims despite the difficult training cycle they are in.

The CUI women were victorious 209-45 while the men recorded a 189-67 win in what was only the 2nd meet of the season for the young Bulldogs.

The meet started well with 1-2 finishes for CUI in both the women's and men's 200 medley relays. The men's foursome of Jayden Hernandez, Jack Harris, Julian Hernandez and Jonathan Dose lowered their PCSC conference leading time to 1:34.75 with Jonathan anchoring in a season best 21.2.

A trio of Golden Eagles earned their first ever collegiate victories on Saturday. Freshman Kristen Faith Urquhart led wire-to-wire in the 1650 free as she and senior teammate Zoey Carrillo went 1-2 in the longest race on the docket. Freshman Payton Doak powered to a win in the 200 butterfly, just missing the 10th fastest time in CUI history in that event. She led a 1-2 finish with senior NCAA qualifier Ryan Burke chasing her to the wall.  Finally, Julian Hernandez won the 100 butterfly in a strong effort to edge the second place swimmer from Redlands. Getting the 2nd win of her young career, Carissa Ward stroked to a smooth 2:09.04 in the 200 back, now the 9th fastest time in CUI history in that event.

Golden Eagle veterans offered up some great efforts as well. Junior Lanis Webb swept the 100-200 backstroke events hitting season bests with both swims. His 53.49 in the 100 moves him up to number three in the PCSC rankings. Fellow junior Joey Molettieri dropped down from his customary distance events to show off his sprinters power in the 50, 100, 200 freestyles (21.4 split-47.55-1:44.90) and senior Georgia Caraway nearly swam to a PR in her victory in the 100 breaststroke with her 1:08.8 now a Top 5 time in the PCSC. Garrin Hatfield had an outstanding 200 butterfly, posting a season best 2:00.6 good for 2nd place and the women's 100 freestyle trio of Alice Stainer (53.7), Rachel Maki (54.4), and Aubrie Carver (54.9) gave the Golden Eagles a big boost early in the meet.

Both squads flashed some speed to close out the meet.  In the 200 free relay, the women's A squad of Alice, Rachel, Megan Groholski, and Hailey Garcia raced to a half pool length victory.  Carver (24.80) and B relay leadoff swimmer Alex Leland (24.79) rocketed off the blocks to give their teams big advantages.

The men entered three relays and in an impressive display, 9 of the 12 men posted 21-second splits and a 10th went a 20-point split! The A relay quad of Christopher Haygood, Landon McIntire, Jonathan Dose and Jayden Hernandez swam to a 1:25.55, improving on their season best by nearly a full second and increasing their #1 PCSC ranking. The B relay of Owen Neitzel, Nathan Snyder, Joey Molettieri, and Jack Harris nearly held on for a win and recorded a time that is only 2/100th of a second behind the 2nd fastest relay in the conference!

The Golden Eagles continue to focus their energy in the classroom and fine-tuning their efforts in anticipation of a great meet at the LaVerne Winter Invitational at East Los Angeles College, November 17-19.

"This big meet will be a great evaluator of our progress in the first half of the season.  We're pleased with the team's commitment so far but know it is a long road ahead.  The biggest challenge in our season is maintaining a consistent effort day-to-day and week-to-week.  Not getting too high with particular results and trying to avoid letdowns is a constant focus.  It's not about having a good set or even practice, but trying to have solid weeks as a whole. They are tired, know the holidays are coming and classes aren't getting any easier.  We are trying to keep them balanced and not thinking too far ahead.  We're really confident in the Lord's plan for this group and our staff is just trying to shepherd them along the path." - Coach Bert
