Walkington's Game-Winner Cages The Cougars!

CUI Works Overtime To Top CSUSM in First Round

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Golden Eagles had to work overtime on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA DII West Regional hosted by Point Loma.  But the extra work paid off for the Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team as Riley Walkington booted home the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to top Cal State San Marcos 1-0.
After more than 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Hailey Havican fed a pass ahead to Walkington who slipped past the defense and scored the only goal of the match. She emphatically slammed her hand to the ground after the clutch goal before being mobbed by her teammates.

CUI was able to keep a clean sheet the rest of the way and secure its tenth shutout win of the year. That is a new single season record for most shutouts for any Concordia women's soccer team.

Another key moment in the contest came when Riley Urquiza made a diving stop to her left on a scoring chance for the Cougars midway through the second half.  She finished with two saves.

The first half was a defensive struggle with both teams keeping a clean sheet. Goalkeeper Riley Urquiza cut off a couple crosses and the back line worked well together to limit CSUSM to only two shots before intermission.

CUI put two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes with Hailey Havican uncorking one towards the net and the other coming off a corner kick by Olivia Ocampo.  Ocampo curled a couple of good crosses towards the net but the Cougars were able to avoid any early damage.

Defender Gabby Breton extended her school record for career minutes with a full 110 minutes of action. Breton is now the first Concordia women's soccer player to be on the field for more than 6,000 career minutes. The Centennial High School alum from nearby Corona was named First Team All-PacWest this week along with her long-time teammate Layla Comeaux. The duo has played together since they were five years old and are members of this squad's senior class.

The Golden Eagles will now play regional host Point Loma in the second round this Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.  To accommodate both schools, the scheduled regular season finale between both women's volleyball teams at Point Loma that same day is moved from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. This allows both volleyball teams to show their support at the soccer field before their own competition.

The winner of Saturday's match advances to the super regional as one of 16 remaining teams on the hunt for the 2023 NCAA DII National Championship.
