Bolden, O'Sullivan Help CUI Shut Out Cougars

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball teamed traveled down south to finish their series against Cal State San Marcos with a double header where they split and shut out Cal State San Marcos in the second game not allowing a run.
 
GAME 1 - CSUSM 6, CUI 2
 
Matt Des Marets started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and pitched five innings allowing six hits and four runs. Brett Finnel relieved Des Martes and finished the game going three innings with three hits.
 
Nathan Benefeito and Derek Delgado went 2-for-3 during the game each hitting a double.
 
In the second inning Delgado singled up the middle to advance Schonebaum after a walk. Catcher Dante Catalino singled to center field bringing Schonebaum to score. The Cougars answered with two runs in three innings to take a 6-1 lead over CUI.
 
In the eighth Benefeito was down 0-2 in the count and knocked a ball to left center moving Shane Wallace to third after being walked. Nick Hansen was able to bring home Wallace with a groundout to third bringing the score for the Green and Gold to two.
 
GAME 2 – CUI 3, CSUSM 0
 
The Golden Eagles answered back in the third with a complete game by the PacWest Pitcher of the week and NCBWA Regional Pitcher of the Week Riley O'Sullivan who had five strikeouts and only allowed three hits in the seven innings pitched.
 
Jordan Bolden went 3-for-3 with two RBIs along with the only stolen base for the Green and Gold. Shortstop Jake Schulz went 2-for-3 where both players hit a double.
 
CUI started the game off with Hayden Winters being hit by a pitch and a single by Bolden brought home Winters to take an early 1-0 lead. Vito Fowler scored on a hit by Chris Butterfield in the fourth earning a 2-0 lead over CSUSM. Benefeito tripled to right center to start off the fifth inning and a double from Bolden brought Benefeito around the bases to score.
 
The Golden Eagles will start conference play next week as they will travel to Hawai'i to play the three teams from PacWest. CUI will start play against Hawai'i Hilo Friday Feb. 24 with back-to-back doubleheaders.
