SEATTLE, WASH. - In their final meet of the 2023 indoor season, a small group of Golden Eagles from CUI Track & Field took to the skies to participate in the Ken Shannon Final Chance Invite in Seattle. This would be the squad's final chance at qualifying for the DII Indoor National Meet, and many of the athletes took full advantage of their last attempts.
As the only DII competitors at the Dempsey Indoor Center, the Golden Eagles rose to the challenge, and many pushed their limits to rewrite history.
Jori Paradis and
Maria Sartin highlighted the day, setting new school records for CUI.
Paradis set her new school record in the 3K event with a time of 9:55! This new record breaks the previous record of 9:57, established in 2015 by Ashley Bell.
The new 400m record set by Sartin broke CUI alum Maddie Hergert's record of 57.56 by four-hundredths of a second with a time of 57.11.
Graduate student
Sarah Fajer rose to the occasion and threw for an indoor PR of 14.23m. She topped several DI competitors, tying for fourth in her flight.
The women's distance medley team earned a second national qualifying mark with a combined time of 12:04.98. The program had never reached a qualifying mark in this event in its history until this year.
In the mile,
Hector Arteaga ran an impressive 4:15, taking fourth in the first section of runners.
Cooper Tirado,
Bryce Tondryk, and
Noah Plaza added to the overall strong performance of the Golden Eagles, all competing well in their events.
This concludes the green and gold's indoor season, and they will turn their sights to the outdoor season that will begin following spring break. They will open up the season at Cal State Fullerton at the annual. Ben Brown Invitational on March 10th - 11th.
