SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Motivated by the return of their captain, the tenth-ranked Concordia University Irvine men's lacrosse team handed No. 8 San Diego State its first loss of the season.
The previously undefeated Aztecs were no match for the Golden Eagles who soared to a 19-9 road victory.
CUI captain
Brett Masaki - who recently underwent brain surgery and
was first diagnosed with lymphoma and now a rare autoimmune disorder called ADEM - was cleared to practice on Monday and played for the first time in weeks. In a fitting way, more Masaki magic was on display as the captain scored a goal in an amazing return to the action.
CUI has now beaten six nationally-ranked teams including three who were in the Top 10. The Golden Eagles have one of the toughest schedules in the entire country as all but two of their opponents this entire regular season are ranked in the MCLA Top 25.
The Golden Eagles host No. 15 Arizona this Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. back on campus. Fans attending will receive both a golden CUI koozie giveaway as well as a lime green wristband that reads "All for #1, One For All." The wristband is in support of Masaki and his family and the lime green color on each wristband is to help raise awareness for lymphoma.
Saturday will also be Alumni Appreciation Day for our CUI men's lacrosse team as we honor and welcome back members of our past.
