IRVINE, Calif. – Make it three awards in one week for right-handed Concordia pitcher Jake Covey!
After dazzling in a home victory against Azusa Pacific last week, Covey received national attention after he was named the National College Baseball Writers Association DII Pitcher of the Week!
On Monday, Covey was named the PacWest Pitcher of the Week. Then on Tuesday, he earned NCBWA Division II West Region Pitcher of the Week honors.
The red-shirt junior put up a solid performance as he shut down the Cougars offense with a career-high 16 strikeouts and threw a complete nine-inning game against Azusa Pacific on March 27. In the 4-1 victory, Covey only allowed five hits and one earned run while walking just one batter.
This marks a season-high for the Costa Mesa, Calif. native besting his past best of eight strikeouts against Biola earlier this season. With the 43.2 innings pitched so far in the 2024 season he remains at a top 1.85 ERA with a 4-2 overall record. His ERA puts him on top in the PacWest conference and in the top 25 in NCAA Division II.
This is the second complete game for Covey as he pitched a seven inning complete game at Hawai'i Hilo on Feb. 25 while striking out six and only allowing three hits to top the Vulcans.
On Tuesday, hours after the regional award was announced, Covey pitched three innings for his first career save at CUI to help lock down the first win of two wins that day against Chaminade.
The Golden Eagles will take on Azusa Pacific in a non-conference match up on Tuesday, April 9 at 5 p.m. in Azusa, Calif.
