IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in PacWest Conference play after fending off the visiting Dominican Penguins.
The pesky Penguins scored first after Rolando Gonzalez stole the ball and scored in the 15th minute of action. But Concordia regrouped after giving up that first half goal to prevail 2-1 in the end.
The Golden Eagles capitalized when freshman midfielder
Gianluca Guimaraes found
Miguel Arroyo in the box in the 38th minute. Arroyo caught everyone off guard by shooting quickly to net the equalizer.
With the score knotted 1-1 at intermission, CUI changed up some of its game plan and went with a slightly different look to start the second half. The plan worked as the Green and Gold earned a few more corner kicks and started to put more pressure on the Penguins.
In the 73rd minute, CUI forced the ball in to the attacking zone and
Hugo Viramontes headed a ball over to
Andy Jun who just barely hit the ball past the goal line. The keeper for Dominican caught the ball, but the referee crew signaled that the ball had cleared the line and that the goal counted. CUI took the lead 2-1 and held on in the final 18 minutes to secure another three points in the conference standings.

Concordia finished with a season-high 23 shots but Dominican actually put more shots on goal (six to Concordia's five).
CUI has now put together a four-game unbeaten streak with home wins over UC Merced and Cal State East Bay to close out non-conference action followed by
a gutty 2-0 road win at Westmont prior to defeating Dominican.
Next for the Golden Eagles is a home date with Jessup this coming Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. PT under the lights. The women's soccer squads will play before their match at 3 p.m.
This is all part of a five-game homestand for both Concordia soccer teams in the heart of conference play.
