IRVINE, Calif. - The nationally-ranked Golden Eagles completed a four-game series sweep of PacWest newcomer Vanguard over the weekend.
In the process, CUI moved up two spots to No. 21 on Tuesday in the NFCA DII rankings, improved to 15-1 in league play and maintained its stay in first place in the PacWest standings.
Remarkably,
this is the fifth time already in just two months that Concordia University Irvine softball has been named the PacWest Softball Team of the Week!
Here's a look back at Saturday's sweep over the Lions.
Game 1: CUI 6, Vanguard 3
Starting pitcher
Bella Calvo opened the first game of the doubleheader and teamed with freshman
Kailey Estes to handle the Lions. Calvo took the game into the fourth, and Estes also threw a great game in relief, going 3.1 innings, only allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, and earning her fourth win in the season. Estes now has a 2.24 ERA in 25 total innings pitched and her record is 4-0.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Golden Eagles leadoff hitter
Jessica Im broke through for CUI in the top of the fifth inning, helping CUI regain the lead after being tied for the majority of the game. Second baseman
Mya Diaz was another key contributor to the Golden Eagles rally, scoring two runs and having multiple hits in the game.
Game 2: CUI 4, Vanguard 0
Heading into game two of the doubleheader versus the Lions, CUI's
Kacie Gossett threw an absolute gem of a game, going 7.0 innings while striking out 11 and allowing no runs and only four hits. Gossett improved to 5-0
just a handful of days after pitching her first career no-hitter.
A little similar to the first game, the offensive output came from second baseman
Mya Diaz, who stepped up big time on Saturday and scored three runs on two hits to help the Golden Eagles close out the day with another impressive victory.
