Box Score 2 HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The CUI baseball team is closing out their island road trip and finishing with a four game series against Hawai'i Pacific. Both games were a tough competition but the Sharks were able to pull off two wins at the end with scores 9-8 and 12-9.
CUI 8, HPU 9
In the first game
Jake Covey was the starting pitcher and went five innings allowing 11 hits along with six earned runs.
Scott Wood,
Richie Kingsborough, and
Nathan Hunter came into the game as relievers and had a combined four hits and three runs.
HPU came out scoring first in three consecutive innings to take a 4-0 lead by the fourth inning. CUI answered back scoring three in the fifth which
Tank Espalin had an RBI single to left field to bring
Haku Dudoit home.
Isaiah Walz went on to score on a wild pitch from the Sharks and Espalin scored from a ground out from
Nicolas Erickson. The Sharks scored another two in the bottom of the fifth but the bats became hot for the Golden Eagles in the sixth.
Makamae Du Pont was hit by the pitch followed by a single from Dudoit to put a runner in scoring position.
Niko Santamaria took advantage and hit an RBI single to right field following by another two RBIs from Walz and Espalin to tie the game at six a-piece.
Landry Spitler came in clutch with two RBI single to take the first lead of the game. The Sharks finished the game with a slight chip with a final 9-8 score.
CUI 9, HPU 12
After HPU had the slight edge over CUI for the first game
Wyatt Madison and Santamaria started things off with an RBI triple and single to take a 2-0 lead in the first. The Sharks went on to score four from a three run homer and double in the first two frames.
In the fifth three Golden Eagles were hit by pitch to help CUI move the bases and get in position to score and scored two runs off wild pitches thrown by Hawai'i Pacific. With the bases loaded HPU drew a walk to Dudoit and gave the Green and Gold 5-4 lead. Concordia was at it again the seventh scoring another four runs of a fielder's choice and two doubles from Walz and Erickson and extended their lead 9-4. The Sharks hit two home runs in the bottom of the seventh including a walk off grand slam to take the game at 12-9.
Josh Pugh was on the bump for the second game and went 3.2 innings allowing four runs while striking out three.
Kaj James and
Conor Meehan had a combined six hits and eight runs to close out the game.
The Golden Eagles will look for a rematch as they will finish the series against Hawai'i Pacific Saturday Mar. 8 with start times 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. PST.
