Box Score 2 HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawaiian native
Kaipo Haole hit a pinch-hit two-run homer and
Landry Spitler also went yard on Saturday out on the islands as Concordia closed out its four-game series with Hawai'i Pacific.
Despite two gritty efforts by the Green and Gold, the host Sharks found a way to slip away with two victories.
Game 1: HPU 9, CUI 7
One of the highlights of the whole road trip for the Green and Gold came when Hawaiian native
Kaipo Haole blasted a two-run homer. His teammate and fellow Hawaii native
Haku Dudoit (younger brother of CUI alum Haloa Dudoit) shared the moment as he was along for the ride.
Landry Spitler smacked a two-run homer to put the Golden Eagles on the board after they fell behind 4-0.
Jamison King turned in a valiant effort by going more than three innings out of the bullpen in relief of starter
Evan Langer.
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the Sharks held on for the 9-7 victory.
Game 2: HPU 5, CUI 4
The Sharks built a 2-0 lead in the first frame before the Concordia offense came to life. In game two, the Golden Eagles struck twice in the third inning to knot the score.
Nicolas Erickson started the fun with a RBI triple that plated catcher
Vito Fowler. Moments later, Erickson scored thanks to a RBI single by
Landry Spitler.
We stayed tied at 2-2 all the way until the top of the fifth inning, when
Wyatt Madison knocked in the go-ahead run with a RBI single.
Isaiah Walz had led off the frame with a single and advanced into scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Erickson.
Niko Santamaria pushed home an insurance run with an infield single that allowed Spitler to score from third base.
Starting pitcher
Matthew Kaiser nearly tied his career-high by registering nine strikeouts in 6.0+ innings of work. In each of his last two outings, he had notched ten punchouts.
CUI was in control until the bottom of the seventh. The pesky Sharks refused to go quietly and loaded the bases with three walks. Ultimately HPU rallied to eke out a 5-4 win in the series finale.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a four-game series with nationally ranked Point Loma. The Sea Lions will host CUI for two games on Friday, March 14 starting at High Noon.
Then the series moves back to Irvine on Saturday, March 15 with that doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
