HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team ended its Hawaii road trip with a tough battle against the Hawaii Pacific Sharks on Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles led by five at halftime and walked to their huddle leading 47-43 after three quarters. However, HPU had other plans and rallied with a big fourth quarter to steal a 70-62 victory.
Two-time PacWest Defender of the Week Genesis Hopkins earned her fifth double-double in seven contests for Concordia. The sophomore transfer from Sonoma State finished with a team-high 19 points to go with 12 rebounds. She was also a very efficient 7-for-10 from the floor.
Camryn Kiernan chipped in with three made triples as part of her 14 points. Freshman
Allison Shumate added 11 points off the bench with sophomore
Cadence Tarrant providing nine more to help the cause.
The Golden Eagles held a huge advantage at the free throw as they drew tons of fouls by the Sharks. Tarrant, Shumate and Hopkins all were locked in at the charity stripe and they each went 5-for-6 when it came to free points.
Freshman guard
Asia Darcuiel hit a driving layup to put Concordia up one by a count of 59-58 with just about 2:30 left in the game. But HPU unfortunately finished the game on a 12-3 run.
Concordia is still 7-5 in PacWest play with an overall record of 9-8. The Golden Eagles remained in sixth place in the ongoing chase for the top six spots that will clinch a berth in the upcoming PacWest Conference Tournament in March.
