TAMPA, Fla. – Drawing its second ranked opponent in three days, the Concordia University Irvine men's lacrosse squad went head-to-head with No. 2 University of Tampa on Wednesday night.
Jeremy Barnes and
Gabriel Skegin-Sipes led the CUI offense. Barnes finished with three goals and three assists while Skegin-Sipes had two goals including the first of the night for the Golden Eagles.
Erik Hollis scored the second goal of the game for CUI in the first period after registering a hat trick in
Monday's epic 13-12 overtime win over No. 15 Embry-Riddle.
Tampa made its move in the third period and did not allow a goal in that frame. CUI responded with four goals in the fourth to finish strong. Barnes had all three of his goals in the final 12 minutes of action with
Matt Carresi assisting on one of them. Skegin-Sipes rounded out the scoring in the final minute of play as Tampa cemented a 17-7 final decision.
Concordia's
Brody Woods matched Tampa's starting goalie as they both finished with eight saves. CUI also drew even in the face-off X as both teams combined for 14 wins.
Dawson Loudermilk won 11 of his 22 faceoffs taken and
Tony Pucci went 2-for-5 in spot duty.
Loudermilk led Concordia with seven ground balls while
Jackson Crocker and
Noah Pillow were each credited with three apiece. Pucci,
Asa Davison and
Parker Teel each were credited with two ground balls.
Concordia concludes its three-game road trip in the Sunshine State with a Friday date with Florida Tech.
The next home game for the Golden Eagles will be Thursday, March 12 at 6 p.m. PT under the lights against new NCAA DII and RMAC opponent Northwest Nazarene.
