LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles faced a pair of top-five tests Friday at Merle Norman Stadium, squaring off against No. 3 Cal Poly and No. 4 USC in a challenging day of competition on day two of the Battle of LA.
CUI 0, Cal Poly 5
The Golden Eagles opened the day against the third-ranked Mustangs, battling across all five courts in a 5-0 decision.
At the top flight,
Olivia Medina and
Aliyah Moore battled Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter, keeping within striking distance in the second set before falling 21-14, 21-18.
Gabby Reinking and
Lexi Godbey took the sand at Pair No. 2, dropping a 21-13, 21-11 contest. At No. 3,
Kelia Giusta and
Ashley Rossi fought through long rallies before falling 21-11, 21-15.
Rosie Cline and
Jordan Vander Veen represented Concordia at No. 4, falling 21-16, 21-11, while
Madi Kelly and
McKenzie Perrault rounded out the lineup at No. 5 with a 21-12, 21-12 decision.
CUI 0, USC 5
In the afternoon contest, the Eagles squared off with fourth-ranked USC. The Trojans jumped out early, taking the doubles point with victories at courts two, four and five.
Medina and Moore again led the lineup at No. 1, facing Zoey Henson and Sarah Wood in a 21-9, 21-15 match. Reinking and Godbey delivered the tightest opening set of the dual at No. 2, narrowly dropping a 22-20 decision before USC closed out the second set, 21-10.
At the No. 3 spot,
Kelia Giusta and
Ashley Rossi battled throughout but came up short in straight sets, 21-15, 21-15.
Rosie Cline and
Jordan Vander Veen turned in a competitive performance at No. 4 before falling by the same 21-15, 21-15 margin. Rounding out the lineup at No. 5,
Madi Kelly and
Jayda Tupea faced a tough Trojan pair, dropping a 21-7, 21-14 decision.
