IRVINE, Calif. – CUI men's volleyball team picked up their first MPSF conference win against Menlo in sweeping fashion. The Golden Eagles earned a straight-set victory over the Oaks with scores 25–21, 25–22, and 25–16.
The match was competitive early as Menlo kept the first two sets close but CUI maintained control in key moments to secure both frames. In the third set CUI pulled away with a strong run and consistent play on both sides of the net to close out the match and complete the sweep. The Golden Eagles were dominant at the back line as they reached a season-high of 11 aces that could not be returned from the Oaks.
Leading the attack was
Logan Whitaker who delivered a match-high 12 kills while hitting .261. Whitaker also contributed from the service line with a team-high four aces and added five digs defensively.
Outside hitter
Myles Henderson was highly efficient offensively recording nine kills on 17 attempts with only one error for an impressive .471 hitting percentage. Henderson also chipped in an assist, an ace, and six digs.
Christian Galoppo added eight kills and contributed defensively as well with five digs.
Middles
Paul Schulteis and
Nathan Habermas tallied a combined six kills. Their presence was felt at the net defensively which included three block assists. Schulteis' serve was on point as he recorded another three ace night marking his second of the season.
Running the offense was setter
Matt Fisher who orchestrated the attack with 27 assists while adding four digs and two block assists. Defensively
Joseph Nunez wore the sole libero jersey and scooped up two digs.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court Saturday Mar. 7 against Menlo again with a 3 p.m. start time in the CU Arena.
