Concordia Men's Volleyball capped off its 2016-2017 season Wednesday night with a three-set win over Benedictine in Mesa, Ariz. The Eagles finished with an 18-12 overall record.
The Eagles rebounded from their loss last night and produced 17 more kills just a day later with 47. Although they hit .240, they held their opponents to .176 on the attack.
Concordia fell behind 3-1 in game one, but tied it on the first two of 12 kills from Hunter Howell. Benedictine took a four point run to go ahead 14-9, but three kills from Howell an ace from Chandler Gibb forged a five point Eagle run to tie the game at 14. Late in the game, the Eagles utilized five straight errors from their opponent to take a 25-23 win.
In set two, the Eagles maintained a slim lead throughout the game. Jonathan Predney punched the win ticket with two straight kills. The BenU Eagles gave Concordia a few more points to start game three and a kill from Josiah Bergt put them ahead 7-5. Bergt buried another hit late in the game to put Concordia within one of match point. Following a Benedictine error, Brian Failinger stepped back to serve for the final point. The senior closed out the game and his career with an ace.
Along with Failinger, a group of Eagles produced positive play for the team throughout their final season.
Senior Libero Ryan Murphy ended with 124 digs and 27 assists. Outside hitter Andrew Hammer had 155 kills, 107 digs and 47 blocks in his senior showing. Ryan Anselmo started in 26 matches with 239 put-aways, 18 aces and 45 block assists. Joseph Pillon hit .239 with 80 kills, 10 aces and 44 digs.
Next year, the Eagles will officially join the MPSF Men's Volleyball Conference.Â
