Concordia Men's Water Polo wasted no time proving its talents at the Triton Invitational. The Eagles went 3-1 over the weekend, defeating Chapman, Fresno Pacific and Air Force.
Although the Eagles fell to the Gauchos, Concordia didn't go down easy. UC Santa Barbara led 4-3 in the first, but Concordia scored five times in the second to even the score at eight. In the third, the Eagles were outscored 5-3. The Gauchos held off the Eagle attack in the fourth and won 15-11.
Angel Rojas and Messan Moore both posted four goals. Patrick Zsiros, Spencer Hosch and Daniel Devine scored one each.
In the next game, Concordia defeated Chapman 9-7 on goals from five different Eagles. Rojas tallied three more, John Roberts added one in the third and Daniel Castagnola captured his first goal of the year. Zsiros and Moore mustered up two more apiece.
Sunday, Concordia's early offensive success set them apart from Fresno Pacific. The put up five in the first and second to take a 10-3 lead. But the Sunbirds didn't let the Eagles swim away with an easy win. They crept back into the game with three goals in the second four in the third. Concordia's two fourth quarter goals were enough to earn the 12-10 decision.
The Eagles defeated Air Force 13-12 to cap off Labor Day weekend. A six goal second quarter helped Concordia keep the lead over its opponents who initially led 3-1 after the first. Rojas racked up three more goals to close the weekend out with 12 total.
Now with a 3-1 record, the Eagles will face the UC San Diego Tritons on September 8th in Irvine, Calif. The game is slated for 12 p.m. at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.
