The Concordia men's water polo team showed a renewed commitment to defense with a solid outing Friday afternoon against No. 9 UC Davis.
The Eagles played the Aggies to a 2-2 even tie in both the second and third quarters and were within 6-4 as both teams entered the final period.
But the Aggies pulled away with eight goals in the fourth quarter and were able to escape with a 14-6 road victory.
Patrik Zsiros led the Eagles with two goals.
Alfredo De La Mora also collected seven saves and gave the Eagles a huge boost between the pipes.
"Alfredo was an all-star out there today," said Concordia senior
John Roberts. "He is the backbone of our defense and when he gets saves it really feeds our team and he gets in the other team's heads."
"They are a fast team and it's good to know where we should be," continued Roberts. "It proves that we can play with anyone in our conference."
"I feel like we played at their rhythm but just in the fourth we just couldn't keep up with them," added De la Mora. "If we play a whole four quarters at that intensity we can surprise some teams. I mean this team was ranked among the top teams in the country. We are capable of playing with the best teams in the nation, we just have to maintain that belief and intensity."
Concordia returns to action this Saturday at the Gary Troyer Tournament in Pomona. The Eagles will face Whittier College at 2:20 p.m. and then Pomona-Pitzer at 6:20 p.m.
