Callie Nunes has become a familiar name during the 2018 softball award season, and on Wednesday afternoon, she earned two more honors.
Nunes was named a
First Team Division II All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She was also named the
2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Freshman of the Year.
The honors are well deserved for Nunes, who completed her historic 2018 season as not only one of the best pitchers in Division II this year, but as one of the best in Concordia and PacWest Conference history.
In 41 appearances, Nunes finished the season with a 0.74 ERA, finishing second in the nation and shattering the PacWest single season record. Her eight saves were good for second best in the nation, as well, and set a new Concordia single season record. Nunes also finished third in the country in strikeouts with 291 and second in strikeouts per seven innings with 10.7.
On the year, she recorded 25 wins, opponents hit just .129 against her, her WHIP was just 0.80 and she threw two no-hitters. Along with being named to the NFCA All-America team and earning the Schutt Sports/NFCA Freshman of the Year, she was named to the Div. II Collegiate Commissioners Association All-America First Team, D2CCA Pitcher of the Year, PacWest Conference First Team, PacWest Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, D2CCA All-West Region and NFCA All-West Region.
Nunes was also named First Team All-America by the Div. II Collegiate Commissioners Association. This is the 12th season of the All-America Program which is selected by CoSIDA members from the schools playing in NCAA Division II and third in which the program was solely sponsored by the Division II Collegiate Commissioner Association.
Nunes and the Eagles ended their season with a postseason berth. After winning the PacWest regular season title, they hosted the West Region Tournament for the first time in school history and finished with a 46-14 overall record.
