IRVINE, Calif. - Concordia sophomore pitcher Callie Nunes has been named a finalist for the Schutt Sports/NFCA National Pitcher of the Year award.  It is the second consecutive season Nunes has been named a finalist for the award.

Given annually, ten players are named finalists for both the Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year award.  Among the finalists, each award winner is chosen.  This year's awards will be announced on May 30 after the NCAA DII Championship winner is decided.

Nunes is just one of three pitchers on the list, and she is joined by Grand Valley State senior Allison Lipovsky and University of North Georgia junior Kylee Smith.  Of the ten total finalists, Nunes is the only underclassmen.

The Concordia ace stands at or near the top of every major pitching category in Division II.  For the season, she ranks first in wins (33), fourth in hits allowed per seven innings (3.49), fourth in shutouts (12), fourth in strikeouts (259), and eighth in ERA (1.17).

Nunes has also thrown six no-hitters in her career, including four this season, and has earned a win in her last 13 decisions dating back to March.  In the opening round of the postseason, Nunes went 2-0 in the Regional and helped the Eagles advance to the first Division II Super Regional in program history.

Nunes and the Eagles continue their push to the Women's College World Series this week, as they take on UC San Diego in the NCAA Division II Super Regionals.  CUI will be hosting the Tritons in a best-of-3 series starting with Game 1 on Thursday afternoon.
