GENEVA, Ohio – Two sophomore swimmers from Concordia University Irvine were competing Wednesday and Thursday at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships before the decision was made to cancel the rest of the competition.
Katelyn Thomas placed 27th in the nation in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.60.
Kyle Benjamin placed 19th in the nation in the 400 IM with a time of 3:57.20.
Thomas was seeded eighth in the 100 backstroke but didn't get the chance to swim. Benjamin wasn't able to compete in the 500 freestyle after being seeded 39th.
Also on Thursday, the NCAA announced it had cancelled all winter and spring sports championships for this school year.
"It's been a tough week for student-athletes everywhere," said CUI head coach
Bert Bergen. "These two handled the situation as well as anyone could expect and represented CUI, their teammates, families and the Lord extremely well."
The PCSC was well-represented during the time that competition was allowed. Three divers from Azusa Pacific, four swimmers from Fresno Pacific and one Cal State East Bay swimmer each made the finals on day one.
"It was great to see the support all week between the athletes from Cal State East Bay, APU, Fresno Pacific and CUI. We have a great sport and great kids. We'll be ready for Birmingham in 2021!"
