Top 20 for '20: CUI Baseball Delivers Coach Turgeon Career Win No. 100

No. 5 - Green and Gold Help Their Skipper Reach A New Milestone

IRVINE, Calif. - Over the past few weeks, the Eagles athletics department has decided to honor student-athletes with the 20 most memorable moments in CUI Athletics from the 2019-2020 school year.

We continue our Top 20 for '20 series with Concordia University Irvine's baseball head coach Joe Turgeon earning career win No. 100 in the 2020 season. Turgeon and the Eagles achieved that milestone at the end of February after winning both games in a PacWest Conference doubleheader against Holy Names.

"I'm extremely proud of them and it's just as much their 100th win and this coaching staff's as well if not more than mine," said Turgeon. "I don't ever take credit for the win. A lot of these players and coaches have been here the whole time. However many losses, I'll take credit for those next to my name."

Turgeon became the head coach of the baseball program in July of 2015 just as CUI was joining the PacWest Conference. Prior to that, he served for seven seasons as the CUI baseball program's top assistant coach. During his time as the head coach, the Eagles have accumulated 105 wins and a 78-75 record in PacWest play.

This spring under his leadership, the Eagles earned their first-ever national ranking by the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) when they were listed No. 23 in the Top 25 NCAA DII poll. Although the 2020 season came to a sudden end in March, the Eagles had stretched out to a 17-7 overall record with a 6-2 record in PacWest play. The Eagles also sported an impressive 14-3 home record while playing in a newly renovated stadium. Over the course of just two months, Bailey Collins, Matt Lautz and Cooper Moore all earned PacWest Player of the Week honors while Shane Schick and Derek Delgado combined for three PacWest Freshman of the Week awards.

2019 was also a strong year for the CUI baseball team as the Eagles went 18-14 in conference and finished fourth after sweeping Holy Names to close out the season. Six Eagles were recognized on the All-PacWest Conference Teams with shortstop Haloa Dudoit also receiving PacWest Defensive Player of the Year. Designated hitter Cooper Moore was named to the All-Region Second Team by the D2CCA, ABCA and NCBWA.

The Eagles won 22 games during both the 2017 and 2018 seasons. In 2017, the Eagles earned three All-PacWest selections. Ryan Land was named CoSIDA Academic All-Region and received the Concordia Athletics Academic Achievement Award, which has since been renamed the CUI Male Scholar-Athlete Award. This spring, class of 2020 seniors Dudoit (Male Athlete of the Year) and Collins (Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year) were honored in the fourth edition of the CUI Senior Awards, which was announced virtually to continue the school's tradition of honoring its graduating seniors.
