MALIBU, Calif. - The Eagles won seven events overall and outscored all teams on Saturday while competing in the Rodinoff Invitational hosted by Pepperdine University.Â
CUI competed only on day two of the event and posted solid results with the PCSC top-5 women's teams, as well as NCAA D1 opponent University of San Diego and top-2 men's team and nationally-ranked Cal Lutheran.Â
Â
It's important to note that the meet scoring and results were divided between the D1 teams and then the D2-D3 combined. Â
Â
The Green and Gold started the day off exceptionally well with the 200 medley relay of
Katelyn Thomas,
Ellie Hardey,
Sara Jones and
Hailey Garcia going wire-to-wire to get the win as the only team under 1:50 (1:49.61). That in-season swim is now the 10th fastest in CUI history!
Â
The CUI men followed with a second and third place finish in the medley relay as Albe Cortes (21.20) and
Tim Townsend (21.26) clocked the fastest anchor legs of any swimmers in the meet.
Â
The Eagles topped the medal stands in both the women's and men's 100 butterfly with
Georgia Caraway (58.80 seconds) and
Jayden Hernandez (51.64) each claiming gold.
Sara Jones placed second and
Hailey Garcia took third in that same even to help complete the sweep for the Eagle women.
The 100 backstrokes also proved to be property of the Eagles.Â
Katelyn Thomas won the women's race with
Georgia Caraway placing third. Right behind that duo were
Tori Schachle in sixth and
Amanda Foley in eighth place to lock up more points for CUI. Freshmen
Lanis Webb touched the wall second and
Thatcher Grooms powered home in the final 15 yards to take third place and lead the Eagle men.
Â
In the men's 50 free,
Alberto Cortes blasted from the blocks in the next-to-last heat and put down his fastest time in two seasons (21.58) to grab a win by 1/100th of a second. Chris Haygood (3rd) and
Tim Townsend (4th) were right behind.
Hailey Garcia (3rd) and
Sara Jones (4th) were blazing for the women in the 50.
The women's 500 free was a really exciting race for the Eagles as Burke (5:17.29) and
Faith Silzel (5:17.55) went stroke for stroke for the five-minute race, and finished first and second in their heat. Those sizzling times were good for second and third place overall in that event and both are season-best times.
Â
Meanwhile, Pohlman solidified his position as the top male 500 freestyler in the conference. His time of 4:44.32 was five seconds clear of his nearest pursuer.Â
Jon Sutherlin (4:51.12) held off teammate
Kyle Stocek (4:51.34) tor third place and
Joey Molettieri raced home to grab eighth (5:01.47), giving the Eagles four in the Top 8 in that event as well.
Â
In 1-meter diving, senior
Kayla Newman finished third with a new PR score of 188.40, which was ten points better than her previous best.Â
To close the meet, the women's 400 free relays both finished top-three with
Amelia Brady posting the top split among all Eagles (53.7). The men's "A" relay challenged Cal Lutheran for all 16 lengths coming in a second behind the Royals. Albe Cortes flew to his fastest swim in two years, splitting a 46.5 on his leg.
Â
"The team is in the middle of a heavy training cycle and is actually really run down," said CUI head coach
Bert Bergen. "To get themselves ready and race as well as they did against some top-tier competition is a testament to their heart and competitiveness. They work so well together and we're happy with the results. We've got a long way to go but this is a nice step along the way. The Lord gave us a nice lift today."
Â
The Eagles look forward to welcoming back former CUI swimmers and divers for the annual Alumni Meet at Portola High School which is next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Â
