CUI Men Win La Verne Winter Invitational; Women Take Third

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - Both Concordia University Irvine swim and dive teams put on quite the display this weekend at the La Verne Winter Invitational.

After three consecutive days of intense competition, the CUI men emerged with the most points in the field, taking first place out of the nine competing schools.

The Eagles piled up 2,118.5 points to win the meet. UC Santa Cruz placed second with more than 1,500 points and Simon Fraser University was third.

Among the many highlights, the quartet of Christopher Haygood, freshman Lanis Webb, Tim Townsend and Alberto Cortes won the 200 yard freestyle relay race.

Haygood also placed second individually in both the 50 free and 20 free, in addition to earning a third place time in the competitive 100 free.  His time in the 50 free moved him into tenth place on the all-time list in the CUI record books.

Kyle Benjamin and Jayden Hernandez wowed everyone in the pool when they finished first and second in the 100 yard IM with freshman Nathan Fleischmann placing fifith in the same heat. For Benjamin, it's also a new school record in the 100 yard IM!

Benjamin also earned three NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 500 free, 1650 free and 400 IM.

Cortes posted his fastest times in three years in both the 100 free and 100 butterfly. He took fourth place in that 100 free race as well as the 50 free.

Webb owns two of the fastest times in the entire PCSC after huge showings in the 100 back and 200 back. Both have him among the Top 4 in those categories in the conference.

The CUI women completed an amazing effort with a third-place showing to edge their rivals from nearby Biola University. The University of San Diego claimed victory on the women's side with UC Santa Cruz finishing runner-up out of 13 total teams.

Concordia's Katelyn Thomas also notched one of CUI's four NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 50 free. In addition, she set a school record in the 100 IM with her third-place finish. On top of all of that, Thomas claimed victory in the 100 backstroke.

Every race that Ryan Burke competed in was a personal best. She took second in the 100 fly and third in the 400 IM - and in both those events she posted the second-fastest times ever for a CUI swimmer. She also finished Top 5 in both the 500 free and the 1650 free (4th place and 4th all-time in CUI history).

Hailey Garcia set PRs in the 50 free (24.19 seconds and 5th-best in school history) and 100 free (53.10 and 8th-fastest at CUI).

Overall, CUI earned 57 Top-8 "A" finalists for the men's and women's teams.

"We encouraged (and challenged!) the team to focus on racing and less on time," explained CUI head coach Bert Bergen. "This became less of a mid-season "peak meet" and more of a tough in-season invitational due to the challenging multi-race format, two sessions per day for three days and the less-than-optimum air quality in the indoor facility. They built momentum each day, leaned on each other and battled. The final day was a testament to their pride and resilience. We learned a lot, know what we need to improve and will be much faster at the PCSC Championships in February."
