IRVINE, Calif. – It's fitting that one of
Georgia Caraway's hobbies is scrapbooking.
That's because halfway through her first season, the Concordia University Irvine freshman already has had a number of impressive moments in the pool worth remembering.
Caraway played a part in three different victories this past Saturday, when
she helped the CUI women's swimming and diving team top Fresno Pacific, 107-52. For her efforts, she's been named our Newport Rib Company Eagle of the Week.
The kinesiology major from Phoenix, Arizona, proved she can be a force for the Eagles by capturing first place in the 100 yard breaststroke and turning in the fastest time in the 100 yard butterfly against the Sunbirds as well.
Both were personal best times and after the stopwatch showed 58.97 seconds for her effort in the fly, that mark currently ranks tops in the entire PCSC (Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference).
"I feel like I'm improving each week," said Caraway. "I feel like we are all doing as best we can and I just feel really happy swimming with this team. We didn't even know if we were going to have a season and we've really teamed up together, worked really hard and honestly, it's incredible, I love it."
Caraway was also part of a CUI quartet that combined to win the 400 yard medley relay. Caraway swam the first leg, followed by freshmen
Breckynn Willis and
Jade Hughes. Â CUI upperclassman
Faith Silzel finished off the winning relay, touching the wall before any of the Sunbirds.
After seeing her dominate against FPU, Eagles head coach
Bert Bergen had high praise for Caraway.
"Georgia is part of a freshmen class that's had an immediate impact on our roster and the PCSC rankings," said Bergen. "This group of talented women work exceptionally hard in the water every day, love to race, and have been a blessing to this program.  Georgia is a workhorse, a fighter and would train eight days a week if she had the opportunity."Â
Â
"She is steady and focused," added Bergen. "She'll race anyone at virtually any distance up to 200 yards. We can plug her into as many as seven NCAA events and you know she'll battle for a win."

A graduate of Horizon High School, Caraway was on the same club team as CUI swimmer Kobe Gall from the men's squad. Â She is part of a handful of Arizona natives that have moved to Southern California for their college careers and are excelling at CUI.Â
Â
In addition to scrapbooking, she likes bike riding, and there are a ton of trails near her home town where she and her mother would often go for rides after dinner. She's a huge fan of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dynasty from the 1980s-1990s. She also has a soft spot for photography.
Â
"I like to take pictures with disposable cameras," admitted Caraway.
Â
Sounds like there will be some more photo-finishes worth keeping an eye on in the coming weeks and years for this talented freshman.
Â
In the near future, Caraway and the CUI swimming and diving teams are scheduled to host Cal Lutheran this Saturday, Feb. 27 at University High School.
