MALIBU, Calif.- Concordia University Irvine's men's and women's swim and dive teams are spending the weekend up north in Malibu, Calif. to compete in the Rodionoff Invitational hosted by Pepperdine University. After day one both teams are sitting in the top two and the men's team is currently leading.
Â
The men were up on Cal Lutheran by 80 points at the end of day 1. This lead comes by no surprise as the men won five out of six individual events and went one-two in both relays.
Â
The women are second behind the host, Pepperdine. They have the edge over Cal Lutheran by four points which will turn into close battle on day two. The stand-out performance on the women's side for day one was
Rachel Maki who is the first CUI swimmer in at least six years to win an event at the Rodionoff Invitational. Her time in the 1000 was only 15 seconds from an NCAA B cut. Additionally, the women had multiple top-4 finishes in all six events (including 2-5-6 in the 200 back). In addition to beating Cal Lutheran, they are also over 100 points ahead of Westmont, LMU, and APU.
Â
For day two the University of San Diego and a larger Azusa Pacific group will show up and turn it into a "whole different meet" says Head Coach
Bert Bergen. "We built a sizable lead, but points will be more scarce. We're pretty locked in for October, though."
