MONTEREY PARK, Calif.- Day 3 at the PCSC Championships is always a fruitful one for the CUI swim teams and this year was no exception. The team placed 30 out of a possible 36 swims into the evening finals and the huge night resulted in big moves up the leader board.
The CUI women started the day in 8th place at 223 points, 95.5 points in arrears of 5th place, UCSC. When the last race was completed, the Golden Eagles found themselves in 6th place only 20.5 behind the Slugs (503.5-524) with their amazing 280-point effort! The men were in fourth place to begin the session, and are now 13 points up, having scored 151 points in the session.
Georgia Caraway had an epic (and historic) day for CUI. She rallied on the final lap to move from 4th to earn a silver medal in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 56.90 is a PR and the 3rd fastest time in CUI history. She narrowly defeated teammate
Ryan Burke (and CUI school record holder) who was fourth in the same race. The event was the biggest point earner for the Golden Eagles as
Hailey Garcia (57.92p) was 11th,
Aranza Martha (58.51p) was 13th, and
Breckynn Willis (59.11p) was 15th.
The men were led by
Chris Haygood (50.90p) who finished 10th in a new PR and
Isaiah Phillips who stopped the clock at 52.39p good for 15th.
Hannah Chabin finished 24th in the 400 Individual Medley in a season best time while
Hunter May also put down a season best in the men's race grabbing a 4th place finish.
Payton Bouwhuis scored in his second straight event, getting a PR in his 400 IM (11th).
Alice Stainer was 8th in the 200 free,
Nicole Tormey posted a PR in finishing 20th and
Amelia Brady was 1/10th behind in 21st place.
Landon McIntire was 8th in the men's 200 free (1:42.96p) and swimming stroke-for-stroke,
Chance Warriner (1:42.85) and
Joey Molettieri (1:43.38) went 1-2 (9th and 10th overall) in the B final. Both swims are PRs for Chance and Joey.
Alex Leland was 8th in the women's 100 breast with a gutsy effort and
Ryan Martines (2nd),
Jack Harris (4th),
Trevor Dixon (11th) and
Garrison Veron (16th) led a high-scoring men's event. Ryan's prelims swim of 55.72 is a new PR and is now the 3rd fastest time in CUI history. He ends his CUI career with three straight silver medals in this event.
To close out the individual races, Georgia returned for a gutsy effort in the 100 back to swim a PR and 7th place finish (58.38). Overcoming a frustrating prelims effort,
Aubrie Carver wowed with a 58.88 PR good for 11th overall. She and Georgia now rank 4th and 3rd respectively on the all-time CUI rankings for this event. In the C final,
Claire Oppedahl swam to a PR in finishing 19th (1:00.62) while
Aliyah Treadwell earned a season best time (1:01.95p) to take 24th. The men were led by
Lanis Webb (PR 52.38, 5th),
Michael Ashton (PR, 52.52, 10th) and
Nash Baker (SB, 55.02p, 14th).
Both 400 medley relays earned 4th place finishes, just off the podium as Georgia, Alex, Ryan B. and Hailey battled for the women and Lanis, Ryan M., Chris and last minute add,
Chance Warriner and his 47.2 split held it down for the men.
The last day session starts with prelims at 9:30am and finals at 5:00pm Saturday.
