Golden Eagles Scoop Up New School Records In Michigan

Five Individuals & A Fantastic Quartet Rewrote the Record Books at the Grand Valley State Big Meet

IRVINE, Calif. - Nine total Golden Eagles etched their names in the Concordia University Irvine track and field record books during their recent trip to Michigan to headline a great overall showing by the Green and Gold.

It was a successful week for many reasons.

Let's start with the fantastic foursome of Andrew Driver, Logan Jones, Noah Plaza and Moises Benito. Together, that group blazed its way to a new program-best time of 9:52.60 in the Distance Medley Relay. The triumphant time was highlight of the week for the men's team and put them in the Top 15 in the nation for the DMR in addition to setting a new school record.

Driver and Plaza also had individual accomplishments that were impressive. Plaza broke Ricky Avila's 13-year old school record from 2013 in the 3,000m race with a sizzling time of 8 minutes and 8.93 seconds. Plaza enters this week ranked No. 28 in the event in all of NCAA DII and more importantly holds the top mark in the entire West Region!

Plaza also set a new school record in the men's mile by clocking a time of 4:09.83 to cap off a fantastic week with a flourish on Valentine's Day.

Driver set a second record on the same day as the DMR quartet, The freshman sprinted his way to a time of 49.60 seconds in the 400 meter dash to race right into the CUI record books in that event!

Trey Vergenz also tied his own school record in the weight throw - twice! The SAAC Vice President at Concordia and team rep for the men's track and field team continues to be a force in the throwing events and earned a 17.79 meter measurement at Grand Valley State.

On the women's side, Giovana Pelascini also starred in the women's 400 meter dash. She scampered to a new school record in that event in just 56.53 seconds. Olivia Holmquist also was one to watch in the high jump. The freshman from Hawai'i soared to a new personal best mark of 1.76 meters. That's ALSO good for a Concordia high jump school record!

CUI continues it assault on the record books this coming week at Mt. Sac. Three days of events will be held at the Ron Kamaka Open with both Concordia squads going all day on Saturday for the featured day of competition.
