Pisenti & Vergenz Emerge As Second Team All-Americans!

The Discus-Tossing Duo Finished With High Marks During Friday's NCAA Competition; Freshman Douat Joins As Third All-American from Concordia

EMPORIA, Kansas - It was all about the discus on Friday as four Concordia Golden Eagles showed off their strength during the second day of the NCAA DII Track and Field Championships.

Julia Pisenti and Trey Vergenz both earned Second Team All-American status after finishing in the Top 16.  (The top eight marks garner First Team All-American status and those who place 9th through 16th are Second Teamers)

Pisenti was solid in all three tosses and her middle mark traveled the farthest. The junior unleashed a throw of 47.13 meters which was multiple meters better than her other two throws. One of three women from the PacWest in this event, Pisenti finished in 12th place to settle in as a Second Team All-American.

Vergenz earned marks in two of his three throws and his first impression wound up being his best result on the day. Vergenz was one of 17 student-athletes to make at least one 50-meter throw, and his 50.43 measurement clipped Drak Stapleton of Pittsburg State to edge him out for 16th place and Second Team All-American status.

CUI teammate Tim Weller also competed in the men's discus with Vergenz. In what has been a fantastic year for the Concordia throwers, Weller finished his season with a throw of 45.18 meters. He placed 22nd in the country and is only a sophomore.

Pierre Douat also shined in the decathlon discus. After debuting on Thursday and excelling in the shot put, the freshman from France took fourth place in his field and gathering 618 points in that event. Douat was also fourth among the decathlon group in the pole vault as he racked up a whopping 790 points there as well. He moved up to 15th place in the decathlon standings after two days of action.

That means that despite gathering no points in the high jump event on Thursday, Douat competed well enough to still finish his freshman season as a Second Team All-American at the NCAA Championships!

"Pierre had a tough go with a no height in the high jump but I told him I was so proud of him for how he chose to respond to that and I know that that's ultimately gonna lead him in our program to better results in years to come," said CUI track and field head coach Keegan Bloomfield. "He came back and had a really nice 400 as well as a strong pole vault and just really competed well in all the throwing events in the decathlon."

Looking ahead, Vergenz will get to compete again in a second event on Saturday. The new SAAC President at Concordia qualified in the shot put and will look to finish his junior campaign in style.

On the women's side, freshman Olivia Holmquist makes her debut Saturday at the NCAA Meet in the high jump with her goal of also becoming an All-American.
