San Diego, Calif - The Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team saw its season come to a heartbreaking close Thursday evening, falling to Azusa Pacific by a narrow 59–58 margin in the PacWest Championship quarterfinals at Golden Gymnasium in San Diego.
In a tightly contested battle from start to finish, the Golden Eagles fought until the final possession in a game that featured 11 lead changes and seven ties. Concordia finishes the season with a 14–14 overall record and a 12–10 mark in PacWest play.
CUI opened the game with strong energy, shooting over 70 percent in the first quarter while building a quick offensive rhythm. The Golden Eagles took an early lead behind efficient scoring and controlled play on both ends of the floor, finishing the opening period with a 16–19 deficit despite their hot shooting.
The Golden Eagles responded with a strong defensive second quarter, holding Azusa Pacific to just five points in the period. Concordia's defensive pressure forced difficult shots and limited the Cougars' scoring opportunities, allowing CUI to remain firmly within striking distance heading into halftime.
Recently named PacWest Freshman of the Year Asia Darcuiel led the Golden Eagles offensively with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting while adding seven assists in an impressive all-around performance. Fellow freshman Allison Shumate also provided a strong presence with 10 points and six rebounds in her first career postseason start, while Cadence Tarrant contributed nine points off the bench.
Genesis Hopkins delivered one of the most dominant rebounding performances of the season, pulling down 17 rebounds to go along with seven points. Hopkins helped Concordia control the glass as the Golden Eagles out rebounded the Cougars 43–38.
The game remained close throughout the second half, with both teams trading baskets as the lead continued to shift back and forth. Concordia battled in the paint, scoring 30 points inside and staying aggressive offensively despite Azusa Pacific's defensive pressure.
In the final quarter, the Golden Eagles continued to fight as Darcuiel and the Concordia offense worked to keep pace with the Cougars. CUI had opportunities down the stretch but ultimately fell just one point short in a dramatic finish.
Despite the loss, head coach Christine Collins-Kiernan expressed pride in her team and the progress the program has made this season.
"I am so proud of this team," said Collins-Kiernan. "We talk about a culture of joy, and every day is the best day just being with them. We have all but two seniors coming back next year, but those seniors helped get this culture turned around."
The Golden Eagles close the year following a significant turnaround season that saw the program make major strides and return to postseason contention. With much of the roster expected to return next year and a strong foundation in place, Concordia has plenty to be proud of as the program continues building toward the future.
