IRVINE, Calif. – One the eve of the PacWest Conference Championships getting underway, Concordia duo of
Asia Darcuiel and
Camryn Kiernan were both named to All-PacWest Teams.
Darcuiel was named PacWest Freshman of the Year and made Second Team All-PacWest. The San Diego native averaged 15.4 points in her first collegiate season which was tied for second most in the entire league.
The Lincoln High School alum stepped into a starting role in her ninth game and never looked back. Darcuiel scored at least 20 points or more on nine different occasions, culminating with her dropping a career-high 45 points on the road
to help CUI beat Point Loma in overtime. That victory over Point Loma cemented Concordia's spot in the conference tournament and was also the second-most points scored in one game by any women's basketball player in PacWest history.
"Asia has been hunting this from the moment she stepped onto campus," said CUI head coach
Christine Collins-Kiernan. "I still remember sitting down with her and writing out her goals for the year — she didn't just want to be good, she wanted to be transformational. She believed that if she became this type of player, it would elevate our entire program. That's who she is."
"Everything Asia does comes from a place of giving her absolute best for the good of her teammates, her coaches, and for the representation of Concordia University Irvine. She competes with purpose. She prepares with intention. And she plays with a joy that's contagious."
Darcuiel played in every game and immediately became a scoring force for the Golden Eagles by operating at all three levels – and showing off a smooth mid-range jumper.
"She's a special talent — I haven't coached a guard like her since
Jasmine Rachal wore a CUI uniform — and getting to watch that mentorship unfold this year was something I'll never forget. What makes Asia unique in today's era of sports is that she's not only incredibly gifted, she's incredibly coachable. That combination is rare."
"As her head coach, I'm beyond grateful for what she's done to elevate this team and our program. But even more than that, I genuinely love coaching her. She makes me smile every day. She brings energy and joy to our locker room and to every interaction we have. I'm so proud of her and so excited for what's ahead in her career."
Her teammate
Camryn Kiernan enjoyed an exceptional season where she averaged 13.4 points and nearly four rebounds per game. The sharpshooter also nailed the second-most three-pointers in the league and shot 38 percent from downtown in the regular season. That was good for fourth best in the conference on 3 point percentage.
"Camryn has worked relentlessly in every aspect of her game to become an impact player for this program," added Collins-Kiernan. "Over the course of her career, she has played every role we've asked of her — scorer, defender, facilitator, leader — but the common thread has always been this: she's the glue.
The Mater Dei High School alum scored in double figures in 19 of Concordia's 27 games. One of her best outings came when
she scored a career-high 29 points against first-place Vanguard. A couple games later,
she also lit it up on Senior Night with 25 points against Hawaii Pacific.
But she does a lot more than just score the basketball.
"She makes the big shot when we need it," added Coach Collins-Kiernan, who is also her mother. "She takes charges, grabs timely rebounds, guards elite perimeter players and battles in the post. She talks, she pushes, she connects, she elevates. Camryn has an elite basketball IQ, and she's used it all year to make everyone around her better."
"She's been a coach on the floor and a steady voice in our locker room," she added. "Camryn has played a major role in driving the culture forward in this program — holding standards, mentoring younger players, and modeling what it means to compete with purpose. Her value shows in her minutes. Quite honestly, we could never take her off the floor. It shows in the trust of her teammates and in how our team functions when she's out there — there's a calm, a toughness, and a clarity that she brings. I'm incredibly proud of how she finished her final year. She gave everything she had to this season and to this program, and she did it at a very high level."
Concordia is the No. 6 seed at the PacWest Tournament and faces No. 3 seed Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 5 p.m. PT down in San Diego. Point Loma is the host school this year and the Sea Lions will play the winner of that first round match up on Friday at 5 p.m. PT.
