Concordia Stunt starts off season strong

Concordia's STUNT team began its third season of competition on Feb. 17th by securing two wins against Vanguard University (18-7) and California Baptist University (14-13). The Eagles continued their strong streak the following weekend with wins against UC Davis (19-3), Vanguard University (19-9) and Riverside City College (18-7). In their game against the Division I team, Sacramento State University, the Eagles faced a loss of 16-10. This start has CUI Stunt ranked no. 2 in Division II, the highest ranking ever for this program.

STUNT is currently the fastest-growing female sport working towards becoming an NCAA Emerging Sport. This new sport takes the cheering and dancing elements out of competitive cheerleading and focuses only on the most athletic components of the sport: partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps and tumbling. A STUNT game consists of four quarters; quarter one is partner stunts, quarter two is pyramids and tosses, quarter three is jumps and tumbling and quarter four is a combination of all skills. Each team executes specific skills in the corresponding quarter and the judges use a strategic point system to determine which team receives a point. The team with the most points at the end of the game, wins.

Eagles Defeat National Champions: The Eagles faced a tough match against CBU's nationally ranked cheer team; however, their experience and precise execution of partner stunts led them to a one point victory in the last round of the fourth quarter. The Lancers were up one point at the end of the third quarter (jumps and tumbling) which meant the Eagles had to pull ahead in the fourth quarter (combination of all the skills) in order to take the game. In the final round of the fourth quarter, CUI gained a point for partner stunts and tied in both pyramids and tosses, and jumps and tumbling. That point guaranteed a win for CUI Stunt and proved to their future competition that the Eagles are not to be underestimated during this 2018 season.

Out for Revenge: CUI Stunt had a strong lead entering their second tournament day on Feb. 25th. With a record of 2-0, the Eagles were prepared to take on their biggest competition yet: Sacramento State University. The Eagles pulled ahead in the second quarter (pyramids and tosses) by securing three points against Sac State and entered half-time with a lead of 6-4. Unfortunately, Sac State regained those three points in quarter three (jumps and tumbling) and continued to win the game with a score of 10-16. However, Concordia Stunt is not finished with Sacramento State and continues to work on building level five and six skills so the next time they face this competitor, the Eagles will come out victorious.

What's Next: Catch CUI Stunt at their next home tournament on the weekend of March 17th and again in the CU Arena the weekend of March 24th.
