IRVINE, Calif. – Eagles senior setter
Chandler Gibb is a huge reason why the Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team moved up to No. 14 in the AVCA DI-DII national rankings.
After quarterbacking the Eagles to statement victories over No. 10 BYU and No. 6 Stanford, Concordia's all-time leader in career assists and digs is our latest Newport Rib Company Eagle of the Week.
For the fifth time this season, Gibb handed out at least 50 assists in a single match.
In Concordia's five-set victory over No. 10 BYU on Thursday, Gibb dished out 54 helpers as he led the Eagles to a solid .355 hitting percentage in their second win of the year over a top ten team. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native was everywhere against the Cougars, compiling a team-best 14 digs as well as five kills.
Then against No. 6 Stanford on Senior Night, Gibb tallied 37 assists and led the Eagles to an eye-popping .464 hitting percentage in their second straight upset over a ranked opponent. He added two kills, seven digs and a block assist against the Cardinal on Saturday. Gibb also collected 25 assists
against No. 1 Hawai'i and finished the week with an astounding 116 helpers as the Eagles improved to 12-and-4 at home.
Gibb came to Concordia from BYU as a transfer. He has led the Eagles to wins over his former school twice and racked up 54 assists on both occasions. Gibb also has a pregame ritual of knocking the floor before he starts playing.
An English major, Gibb's career goal is to become an author. He enjoys writing and would like to meet George R.R. Martin and Stephen King someday. The setter also recently celebrated his 23rd birthday on Wednesday, April 3.
