STUNT Closes Out Season With Win on NorCal Road Trip

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Concordia University STUNT team traveled north this past weekend for a two-day season finale tournament. CUI faced William Jessup, Vanguard and California Baptist University (CBU) in that order.

On Friday, the Eagles squared off with Jessup for the second time this season.  After being victorious earlier in the season over the Warriors, the Green and Gold was looking to sweep the season series.

The Eagles were dynamic out the gate keeping Jessup scoreless through halftime. Stellar performances by all the Eagles on the mat were key to securing all the points in the first quarter. Other notable performances came from all back spots and bases as they were outstanding through quarter two (pyramids and tosses). With the Eagles up 7-0 at half time, it made Jessup look for answers. CUI started to pour it on in the second half, as the team nailed their jumps and tumbling to increase their lead by 10. The Eagles were strong defensively throughout the fourth quarter, and they only allowed one point. The Eagles soundly defeated the Warriors by a final score of 19-2.

Senior Erica Cogswell summed up the victory after the match.

"From the start we were on and ready and the whole team could feel it," said Cogswell. "It felt great and hopefully we will carry that through the rest of the weekend."

Next up on the schedule was Vanguard. This was the Lions and Eagles third matchup this season and so far the Eagles had split the series 1-1 apiece. The Eagles came out strong exchanging points back and forth with the Lions. These matches between these two squads are always competitive as Vanguard had a one-point lead going into halftime.

With the Eagles down 5-4 in the third quarter, the Green and Gold were able to recover the deficit and jump ahead by one heading into the final quarter. In quarter four, the Eagles and Lions exchanged points back and forth, but the Lions were able to come out on top with a three point victory. The Eagles narrowly lost to the Lions with the final score: Lions 13, Eagles 10.

Overall, the Eagles still have the Lions number as since 2018, CUI has won five of the nine total matchups between the two squads.

The Eagles wrapped up their season taking on the Lancers of CBU. The Lancers this year were a perfect 10-0 coming into the match with the Eagles. This was also their third head-to-head matchup with the Lancers this season. The Lancers have the season series lead 2-0 so the Eagles were looking to take one game by competing tough this series. For the first time this season the Eagles put level 8 (the highest level in STUNT) on the mat and the stunt group made up of Juniors Devan Doyle, Ashton Mudry and Rylee Orme, and Senior Brandi Agans were able to complete the whole routine! The Lancers defense was the deciding factor in this match up limiting the Eagles to 2 points total throughout the whole match. CBU went on to win by the final score of 19-2.

The Eagles finish their 2021 campaign with a 3-5 overall record in Karli Shutt's first season as head coach.
